It was the perfect opportunity to earn a place on the podium. Having been almost perfect in their "remontada" since mid-October, with 10 points out of 12 possible, OL had to continue their good run in Angers to go second behind PSG. Without Toko Ekambi or Cornet, both suspended, and Aouar, not fit enough to start the match, Rudi Garcia decided to opt for three young academy products, including Cherki, who hadn't featured in a month and a half, Caqueret and Bard. Against a team played as a unit, the start to the match was sluggish on the very long grass of the Stade Raymond-Kopa. The first opportunities were also exclusively falling to the hosts, forcing Lopes to be the decisive presence in the match's early going. On the other end of the pitch, Bernardoni had a lot less work to do. Only two off-target headers would trouble him during this first period.
The start of the second half was played in the same vein. On the hour mark, Rudi Garcia made a triple substitution in the hopes of changing the story. Five minutes after coming on, Dembélé gave his team their first shot on target, a sign of an improvement in the game. Le SCO were not, however giving up in terms of their attempts to get forward and Lopes still had work to do. Already a hero in the derby, Kadewere coldly punished the opponent's slack marking by scoring a breakthrough goal. Diomandé also had a part to play in the outcome -- his decisive save on the line in the last seconds preserved the clean sheet. This win allows OL to temporarily go second in the table ahead of Lille's match against Lorient this evening!
