Xherdan Shaqiri joins OL through June 30, 2024
After having passed his medical today in Lyon, Xherdan Shaqiri has signed a 3-year contract with Olympique Lyonnais, until June 30, 2024.
Aged 29 and originally from Kosovo, Xherdan Shaqiri has 96 caps for the Swiss national team, with whom he has participated in 3 World Cups (2010, 2014 and 2018) and 2 European Championshis (2016, 2021), having eliminated France in the Round of 16 on June 28 in Bucharest. Considered one of the greatest players in the history of Swiss football along with Alexander Frei and Stéphane Chapuisat, the attacking midfielder is currently the Swiss national's top scorer in major international tournaments (8 goals in 17 appearances).
An experienced player with more than 400 matches played in four European leagues (Switzerland, Germany, Italy, England) and a versatile player, able to play on the flanks or behind the forwards, Xherdan Shaqiri has all the characteristics desired by Peter Bosz. Since starting his career in 2009/2010, the Swiss international has built up a prestigious track record across his time with the five big clubs with whom he has played, winning, among others things, two Champions Leagues (Bayern Munich in 2013, Liverpool in 2019), seven league titles (Basel, Bayern and Liverpool), four domestic cups (FC Basel, Bayern), two European Super Cups and two World Club Cups.
Xherdan Shaqiri completes a midfield which is already experienced, and features several senior internationals, as well as U21 players. His arrival, after that of the reigning European champion Emerson, confirms that Olympique Lyonnais is giving itself the means, despite a difficult start to the league season, to have a great season in Ligue 1 and in the Europa League, which also remains a goal. .
