Match summary

After a late away to AS Monaco (2-3) and another against Lorient (4-1), the Lyonnais headed south to face Nîmes Olympique. In the race for the Champions League, OL had to win in Nîmes while hoping that Stade Rennais would take points off of AS Monaco at the same time. Les Gones were nervous at the start, conceding the opener after a misunderstanding between Marcelo and Anthony Lopes (Koné 8’), but a reaction was not long in coming!

Lucas Paqueta took advantage of a poor recovery from the Nîmes defense to equalize in the 8th minute, and Lyon's attempts followed one after the other; the pressure on Baptiste Reynet's goal was ceaseless.  Memphis soon took advantage -- on a fine cross from Léo Dubois, playing his 100th match with OL, the number ten turned his defender and beat the goalkeeper with a low shot. The Dutchman scored his 20th goal of the season in Ligue 1 Uber Eats before Lucas Paqueta doubled the lead for Les Gones four minutes later. The Brazilian showed a bit of skill with a chest control and finish which allowed the men of Rudi Garcia to lead 3 to 1. Houssem Aouar, very involved in this first period, also impressed out with several efforts on goal (13', 36') but could not find the net before the break.

After a fairly calm first half, Anthony Lopes proved his skill by keeping out a strike from Renaud Ripart (54'). On the counterattack, Memphis played in Lucas Paqueta on the right flank, who crossed it first time for Houssem Aouar, who scored the fourth goal. Nîmes, however, did not give up and pulled one back with Koné pressing Maxence Caqueret  to make it 4-2 in the 62nd minute. With several changes from coach Rudi Garcia, OL regained their energy and even increased the lead. Rayan Cherki, cut in from the left and stood up a perfect cross for Islam Slimani  to head home and conclude the scoring.

Carried by the great Lucas Paqueta (two goals and and assist), Jean-Michel Aulas team had won 5-2 against Nîmes Olympique (who will finish in 19th place this season). By taking home three points, the Lyonnais stay in fourth place in Ligue 1 Uber Eats as AS Monaco won at the same time against Stade Rennais (2-1). The podium remains in play on the last day!
