It was the opportunity they had dreamed of. After doing the job up to this date, which had been circled on the calendar for weeks, the Lyonnais were set to face Lille with the opportunity to get back onto the podium by overtaking their opponent on the evening, a tantalizing end to the weekend. The match was logically very intense from the first minutes as each team wanted to impose itself on the game but Memphis and his teammates clearly took matters into their own hands, playing with a great sense of unity. Lining up again in a 4-2-3-1 after their last two wins in the league, they were the first to look dangerous, led by an omnipresent Caqueret. In addition to doing well to recover the ball, he also had a magnificent run to set up Slimani with a cutback. The Algerian striker did not miss the chance to score the opening goal. Limited for much of the first half, Les Dogues were trying to score on the counter or from a set piece, and they came into the game with a killer free kick from Yilmaz in the last seconds of the first half.
This reduction in the score on the stroke of halftime was not to have an affect on what had been a very good overall performance. The start of the second half was shaded by Lille, but OL were doing everything they could to ride out their opponents' momentum… unfortunately the visitors scored on the hour to equalize. Now there was everything to be done in an intense match, which was hotly contested as the outcome remained very uncertain. It was end to end and both goalies pulled out all the stops to save their team. Lopes could not, however, do anything in the 85th minute in a one-on-one with Yilmaz, the evening's key player, and a last flurry of chances led to nothing. Beaten, OL no longer have their fate in their hands for a place in the Champions League, sitting four points behind the third-placed Monegasques, their next opponent.
At Groupama Stadium, Décines.
