Scheduled before two crucial matches in Ligue 1, this big match in the quarterfinals of the Coupe de France was by no means a match to be disregarded. Success in a visit from Monaco could indeed set the tone for what was to come. In an attempt to thwart the form team of 2021, Rudi Garcia played a 3-4-3 with Diomande, De Sciglio and Bard coming into the side. The plan worked well in an impressive start to the match dominated by Lyon, who were bossing the game offensively. Their willingness to set the pace, and to get forward allowed them to create great opportunities for themselves but not to take the lead on the scoreboard. Les Gones had a lot of bad luck, hitting the woodwork three times in the span of five minutes!
Their bad luck would continue at the start of the second half, though -- on their first real chance, the Monegasques saw Diomande sent off and won a penalty, converted by Ben Yedder. Already very fiery, the game would get even worse, with ASM getting a second goal shortly thereafter. With this cruel turn of events, the Lyonnais seemed to lose the plot after what had been a fine performance until then. Left feeling unrewarded for their efforts on the night, OL exited the Coupe de France and now only have five league matches to give themselves an exciting end to the season. For that, it will quickly be necessary to switch gears, starting with a visit from Lille on Sunday at 9 p.m.
At Groupama Stadium, Décines.
