OL kept the ball in the match's opening minutes and were immediately on the attack. Paqueta lacked a finishing touch but set the tone for the start of the match. Despite Lyon dominating possession, the Angevins had the match's first big opportunity and it took a nice reflex save from Lopes to keep the visitors from taking the lead. This moment of nerves having passed, Memphis and his teammates resumed their domination and after several attempts, the captain rewarded the efforts of his teammates and opened the scoring after 20 minutes of play. This advantage would even be doubled just before half-time, thanks to the inevitable Paqueta, who finished from a Toko Ekambi cross. With a two goal lead at half-time, OL could return to the locker room with a smile.
Le SCO tried to come back early in the second half, but Lyon's defense remained strong. The second half was somewhat less lively, as neither team wanted to leave space for the other. On two occasions, OL believed they had scored an all-important third goal, but each time the referee signaled an offside. It wasn't until the final minutes then that Les Gones sealed the result, and in fine fashion: Memphis scored with a subtle lob after being being slipped in by Paqueta to give himself a double on the evening. That was the end of the scoring, as the Lyonnais took the three points and got back to winning ways as the run-in intensifies.
