OL were trying to impose themselves on the game from the first minutes in order to put pressure on their opponents. If the Audoniens resisted well, however, they rarely managed to leave their half of the pitch for long enough to trouble the Lyonnais. Despite several corners obtained early on, the visitors could not find the net, despite their domination until half an hour into the match. After a throwing error by the Red Star goalkeeper, Thiago Mendes played in Lucas Paqueta perfectly, who only had to finish with his left foot to open the scoring. Just before half-time, the Ile-de-France side made another mistake, and this time Paqueta turned provider to pick out Memphis in front of goal. Thus, OL returned to the locker room with a two goal advantage.
At the start of the second half Les Gones were back on the attack. Paqueta, impressive throughout, picked out Cherki then Memphis, neither of whom managed to increase the lead. This lack of success would eventually benefit Vincent Bordot's men on the hour when Meissa Ba ran onto the ball in the area 16 meters and left Pollersbeck with no chance. Despite Lyon’s efforts, the hosts did not stop there and equalized through Jimmy Roye from a direct free kick. Stung by this equalizer, OL tried everything to react, but Adiceam, who had seemed unsteady in the first half, had now turned into a veritable wall, repelling all of OL's efforts. The penalty shoot-out would then decide which of the two teams would progress, and after a save by Pollersbeck, OL had their qualification for the quarterfinals.
