After OL-PSG: A reaction, but too late
The opportunity was too perfect: after Lille's shock defeat at home against Nîmes, the Lyonnais had the opportunity to take first place from the Northern side and spend the international break at the top of the table. Unfortunately everything did not go as planned and OL suffered their first defeat of the season against a fellow member of the top four. It was a defeat that could have been by a much larger margin if the substitutes had not done their best to breathe live into a team who had been indifferent over the first hour. Islam Slimani, who was very active in the attacking third, started things off by scoring his first league goal, ten minutes after coming on. He was followed in this by Rayan Cherki, also playing off the bench, who delivered his first top-flight assist to set up Maxwel Cornet, to give his side a glimmer of hope.
But coming ten minutes from the end of the match, this reaction was too late and Navas made sure of the result by making a reflex save from a header by Slimani. Despite it being a silver lining to the match, this reaction from OL was unfortunately not enough against a confident PSG playing at the top of their game. With this loss, Les Gones let slip a great opportunity. However, as the players would remind us after the match, nothing has been decided; there are eight rounds left and the international break will allow the team to reset and recuperate, and can give them renewed impetus ahead of their return to action against Lens.
