After OL-Ajaccio: Slimani joins the club!
Finally! After coming off the bench in every match he has featured in since his arrival, Islam Slimani started for the first time when Ajaccio came to the Groupama Stadium to play in the Coupe de France. For 90 minutes the Algerian international showed all the qualities that had made him one of Juninho's priority targets during the transfer window. Playing on the flank alongside Cornet and Cherki with Memphis in support, the striker showed a great understanding with his teammates. It was he who played in the Dutchman for Lyon's opener, before opening his own account a few minutes later on a pass from Mattia De Sciglio. His fine display didn't end there, though, as he also set up a first goal of the season for Rayan Cherki.
Beyond his statistical impact, Islam Slimani showed everything for which he was recruited: working hard, being dominant in the air, able to play with the ball at his feet, as well as being a presence in the box. Despite his lack of playing time so far, the winner of CAN 2019 has shown he will respond no matter what. As he said following the match, “If you want to play to win, you have to be united. Not just the eleven players, but the 25 players in the squad all need to be involved and fighting for the team." His play on the evening was full proof of this.
