A new matchday, and the scenario changes. While Lille had struck first in the middle of the week, it was OL who had the opportunity this time to put pressure on their rivals in the race for the podium and indeed first place. Les Gones were hosting Strasbourg, who came into the match 15th but as one of the strongest teams since the start of the calendar year -- this was hardly a match OL could take for granted. The Lyonnais knew what they had to do and were quick to impose their superiority. Despite their opponents aggressive and nervy play, which led to Thomasson's expulsion, Memphis teammates responded with strong play and had plenty of chances. The captain opened the scoring after a fine recovery by Houssem Aouar before Toko Ekambi doubled the lead on yet another bit of collective play during a very successful first half!
The team did seem a little slack coming back from the locker room but this had no impact on the scoreboard and the Lyonnais would gradually get going again, albeit facing a much more organized defense on the part of Strasbourg. The breakthrough would have to come through a free kick… one that Memphis delivered perfectly into the top corner. With victory all but assured, Rudi Garcia decided to make some changes, bringing on Benlamri, Slimani and Cherki, then Da Silva, who played his very first minutes as a professional. The score did not change and OL temporarily took the lead in Ligue 1 pending a trip on the part of Lille to Nantes and Paris facing Marseille.
At Groupama Stadium, Décines.
