UCL : OL in the quarterfinals for the fifth time in their history.
Another big European performance for OL! By qualifying against Juventus, Lyon are in the quarterfinals for the first time in 10 seasons, since the 2009-2010 season. During that edition, they achieved the feat of eliminating Real Madrid and had done the same with Girondins de Bordeaux in the following round. Their magnificent run ended in the semifinal against Bayern Munich but will go down as the best finish in the history of Olympique Lyonnais in the Champions League.
OL also reached the quarterfinals on three occasions during the 2000s. The club even managed to repeat the performance over three consecutive seasons, from 2003-2004 to 2005-2006. In 2003-2004, Paul Le Guen's men managed to triumph over Real Sociedad before losing to FC Porto, led then by a young José Mourinho, and future winners of that season's competiton. The following season saw Lyon defeat Werder Bremen before losing on penalties to PSV Eindhoven. Finally, the team of the Stade de Gerland had, in 2005-2006, disposed of the same Dutch team before cruelly leaving the European stage in the quarterfinal against the Italians of AC Milan.
2003-04 Real Sociedad – OL (0-1, 1-0) - King Juni gives Lyon their first quarterfinal
2004-05 Werder Brême – OL (0-3, 7-2) - Essien, Wiltord, Berthod and Malouda define a historic match
2005-06 PSV Eindhoven – OL (0-1, 4-0) - A great show on the pitch and in the stands
2009-10 OL – Real Madrid (1-0, 1-1) - Pjanic sees off the great Real Madrid
