The story between Olympique Lyonnais and Italy goes back a long way. Clubs from across the Alps have long dominated the football scene on the old continent. It is therefore not insignificant that some Italian club paths have crossed that of Lyon. The club does not have very good memories with the clubs representing Calcio because they have often been the executioners of the Lyonnais (6 eliminations out of 8 double-legged European ties).
But Italian clubs do not necessarily mean eliminaion. OL have been able to fend off their Italian opponents twice. The two Roman clubs have paid the price, the first Lazio in the Round of 32 of the 1995-96 season of the UEFA Cup and then AS Roma, also in the Europa League, in the round of 16 of the 2016-17 season.
