Juventus – OL : The champion finishes on a bad note against Roma (1-3)
It's a paradoxical situation on the other side of the Alps. While claiming their ninth straight Italian title a week ago, by winning against Sampdoria, Juventus have failed to reassure observers across the Alps. Their coronation, which comes in a very unique season, did not in fact erase all the concerns around the Old Lady. What is more, there have been defeats a few days later at Cagliari on the penultimate day of Serie A and then against Roma on Saturday night at the end of the league season.
For their final outing before the Round of 16 of the Champions League and on an evening of festivities at their stadium, Juventus lost 3-1 to the Roman club, despite an early opener from Gonzalo Higuain. The essentials were surely lacking for Maurizio Sarri's side, who could not count on Paulo Dybala, still uncertain for Friday against OL and the manager had also rested some of his big players like Cristiano Ronaldo.
The latter was therefore unable to show the way forward to his teammates, as he has done almost all the time for two years with the Bianconeri. After another successful season with his club, the Portuguese had scored 40% of his side's league goals. It's a crazy statistic that shows the importance of this player, even revealing a dependence on Ronaldo. One less goal from the Portuguse and it’s the Old Lady who staggers, like the mixed results since the resumption of play in mid-June with just six matches won from the 14 contested in all competitions.
