Match summary

A few minutes after the end of the big match that launched the Veolia Trophy, it was OL's turn to start its tournament organized at Groupama Stadium. In front of 5,000 spectators, including some members of the nursing staff invited for the occasion, Lyon expected to continue their strong start to the preseason against Rangers FC two weeks before the final of the Coupe de la Ligue against PSG. But things did not go quite as planned. While they had made a very good start, they were caught out by two unfortunate goals after two counterattacks and the Scots offered a very solid block defensively. In a physical end to the first half, Kent saw red and left his team with 10 men.

Rudi Garcia took advantage of the break to make his first six changes. The battles were clearly going OL's way, but a breakthrough was not yet to be found. Still outnumbered, Rangers did not let go and remained dangerous on a few fast counterattacks Lyon accentuated their domination and pressure on Rangers' goal, driven forward in particular by Memphis and Houssem Aouar. Nothing helped, however, and OL suffered their first defeat of the preseason. The next match is Saturday against Celtic FC.

Expert analysis: Anthony Réveillère

We had a good first 15 minutes with link-up play and establishing a sense rhythm. We conceded goals on fine margins. It was a matter of vigilance. We were caught out and Rangers gained confidence. They then played their game on the counterattack. We continued to push with many crosses. We haven't done enough combination play in small spaces. Glasgow has controlled this match.
