The story of the season
OL are well established in Division 1. In the offseason, two of the best players in the squad had to leave the club for financial reasons: Jacques Fatton and Erny Schultz. As a result, the season was not very memorable: OL scored less and conceded too many goals. There was little to take away from the campaign, but it was significant: André Lerond and Robert Mouynet, defenders with OL, were called up to the French team to compete in the 1958 World Cup, which would take place in Sweden.
The match of the season : OL-OM
On March 30, 1958, the crowd at the Gerland roared in anger. On December 22, 1957, the first firecrackers had appeared inside the stadium. The OL/Sochaux match even had to be interrupted on January 19 after a shower of projectiles. But, against Marseille, the supporters had the impression of watching a curious match. Mistakes came one after the other, the refereeing was very average at best and the fans shouted "bribed"! Olympique de Marseille would survive in Division 1 that season only on goal difference.
The player of the season : André Lerond
On October 6, 1957, André Lerond became a French international, playing against Hungary. Eight months later, he would be part of the team that finished third in the 1958 World Cup, having played of all the matches in the tournament. It was an extraordinary journey for the Lyonnais captain, who had arrived from Cannes on December 26, 1951, after only a dozen or so matches in Division. André Lerond left OL in May 1959 with the deep respect of an entire city.
