One day one match (20/03/2014) : Viktoria 2 – 1 OL, incredible Anthony Lopes
Six years ago today, OL traveled to the Plzen region to face Viktoria. In the first leg, Rémi Garde's players did the job by winning by four goals to one. Despite a goal conceded in the first five minutes, Fofana (twice), Lacazette and Mvuemba allowed the Rhone club to win by a large margin (4-1). The difficult task therefore seemed to be done before a trip to to the former Czechoslovakia. And yet the task was more complicated than expected.
From the start of the game, the Czechs know that they had to score quickly to hope to achieve the necessary result against the French to reach the quarterfinal. They started to push high up the pitch and imposed a high tempo on the Gones. In the first twenty minutes, there were three big opportunities for Plzen. Lyon seemed overwhelmed and failed to properly keep the ball. Many difficulties in their build-up play appeared, which has the result of annoying the Lyon manager. Anthony Lopes was impeccable in the moment and maintained a goalless score. The residents of Stade Gerland would even perform a mini-heist just before the break by scoring a goal through “Bafé” Gomis on one of the only chances they had to that point (0-1, 45 ') . At the break, OL were in front on the score board.
At the start of the second period, the hosts did not seem up to the task. They had a lot of trouble bringing danger to the Portuguese goalkeeper. On the hour of play, Lopes had to work to make a superb diving save which unfortunately would only delay the inevitable since Kolar scored shortly thereafter (1-1, 60 ’). Gonalons and his teammates were frightened after conceding another goal only two minutes later through Tcel (2-1, 62 ’). The Doosan Arena began to believe in progressing and a magnificent atmosphere was created over the succeeding minutes. OL become unrecognizable while, on the other hand, Dusan Uhrin's players transcend themselves and even earned a penalty conceded by Dabo. Fortunately for Lyon, the shot crashed off the post.
After these various adventures, Anthony Lopes continued his exploits on several occasions in particular in the 83rd and 87th where the goalkeeper would make two exceptional saves. Olympique Lyonnais finally qualified by a two goal margin against Viktoria Plzen. After this match, the Rhônalpins would face Juventus in the quarterfinal. A narrow elimination against the Turin side after two defeats by a single goal (0-1, 2-1) saw the team play with a lot of fighting spirit, envy and selflessness.
