It had to be done again. Three days after qualifying for the quarterfinals of the Coupe de France away to Nice field, OL were quickly back in action in the city on the French Riviera. The ambition had obviously not changed in the start of February. Undefeated in the first month of 2020, Lyon needed another win to make another leap in the table with 4th place in their sights. And as on Thursday evening, the start of the match was largely in favor of the visitors, who deserved to open the scoring, notably through Karl Toko Ekambi, making his first start. The scenario here, however, was quite different and the face of the match was turned upside down by the sending off of Marçal in the middle of the first period. Nice were invigorated by it and took advantage of their numerical superiority to make their domination of the match a reality after several attempts stopped by Ciprian Tatarusanu. But Lyon has its resources and demonstrated this once again as Toko Ekambi finished Houssem Aouar’s pass just before Adam Ounas was also sent off.
The second period promised to be as eventful as it was exciting, and it was. Both teams had the opportunity to move past their opponent. It was Nice, however, against the run of play, who made the breakthorugh. Everything had to be redone. The teammates of a Houssem Aouar valiantly tried for an equalizer through the likes of Bertrand Traoré, Moussa Dembélé and Marcelo, but exposed themselves on the counter. One of these was a few inches away from sealing the result for good. Hope was therefore still allowed to exist, but in vain. It's the end of the run for OL, who lost after nine matches without defeat and missed a great opportunity to get closer to the podium.
. EXPERT ANALYSIS - BRYAN BERGOUGNOUX
Lots of frustration because the script ought to have made us very happy to come back at half time on level terms. We weren't physically playing well when it was they who had almost the same eleven as Thursday. We had a lot of fresh players so it's a shame.
