Nice - OL (CDF) : 2020, the year of the cups? (20h55 on Eurosport 2)
The year 2020 has begun like a dream for the players of Olympique Lyonnais. With six wins in as many matches (two in the Coupe de la Ligue, two in the Coupe de France, two in the league), Rudi Garcia’s team are quite simply enjoying the best run of thier season. It's a run that will give confidence ahead of the many challenges that await Les Gones in this second half of the season, as they are still fighting on four fronts. It is then up to them to continue the upturn that has coincided with this new decade.
The Coupe de France is undoubtedly a special competition for Olympique Lyonnais. Outside of a Ligue 2 title, it was the first major title won in the history of the club (1964) and it is also the last, if we omit the Trophée des Champions won a few months later (2012). After eight long years without a trophy and six years without playing in a final, OL will return to the Stade de France thanks to their success against Lille in the semi-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue (2-2, 4-3 tàb). The Coupe de France is an opportunity to secure a second visit a few weeks later to St-Denis. Can we dream of a double to end this fallow period?
Despite their place in the league table (12th, 29 points), OGC Nice are a solid championship team. Unbeaten for two months in all competitions (a 4-1 defeat at St-Etienne on December 4), Patrick Vieira's side is gradually coming up after its change of ambition due to the takeover of the club last summer by the INEOS group. With quality players (Dolberg, Ounas, Cyprien, etc.), the Nice squad has many strong points, as evidenced by its draw last Friday against Rennes, third in the league (1-1). So we must beware of this trip to the south, a few days before returning there for the 22nd matchday of Ligue 1 Conforama.
