Mercato : Learn more about Karl Toko-Ekambi
A striker with Villarreal since 2018, Karl Toko-Ekambi has just signed for Olympique Lyonnais. An attacking reinforcement was expected following the major injuries to Memphis Depay and Jeff Reine-Adélaïde at the end of 2019 and it this move has thus been made. The former Angers man knows Ligue 1 Conforama well, having played in this division for two seasons. His experience can be used by Les Gones but it will help the player to integrate as quickly as possible with his new team, which has no time to lose to catch up in the league and who will be keen to continue in the three other competitions (Coupe de la Ligue semifinal, Coupe de France Round of 16 and Champions League Round of 16). He is another welcome asset for Rudi Garcia in view of the crowded fixture list that awaits his squad.
A number 9 by training, Karl Toko-Ekambi is a versatile player who played both centrally and on the wing when he wore the colors of Angers. In his last season with Le SCO in 2017-18, he scored 17 league goals and finished in the Top 10 top scorers in Ligue 1 Conforama. Already having scored six times scorer and added three assists in 19 matches in all competitions with the Spanish side Villarreal this season, the 27-year-old Cameroonian international also has 29 caps and won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017 with the Indomitable Lions.
Karl Toko-Ekambi is a complete player. Capable of going past players with his speed, he is also very physical which allows him to win many duels against opposing defenders. And to complete his profile, he is a player who despite his size (1m85) is very technical and comfortable with the ball at his feet. He can also serve as a fulcrum for teammates since he is able to play in a central role holding the ball up. His versatility and his profile will therefore allow him to offer different options to Rudi Garcia for this second part of the season.
