Having fallen in the final five years earlier in a cruel penalty shootout against Metz, OL had the opportunity to give themselves a second chance in the competition. But the mission did not look very simple with the reception in the semifinal of Nantes, an opponent who would deprive them of the title of champion of France a few weeks later. The big match between the two leaders in the league kept all its promises. In an almost full Stade de Gerland, Jacques Santini's men were quickly behind twice but found the resources to get the win.
