After the setback last week at Groupama Stadium against Rennes, the Lyonnais were keen to end the year on a better note. However, this meeting against Reims was not to be an easy one; in 6th place and two points ahead of OL, Reims have the joint-best defense in the league with Paris Saint-Germain. Jason Denayer's teammates would have to show character to win at the Stade Auguste Delaune.
What a start to Lyon's match! Three huge chances in less than 10 minutes and it started in the second minute with Maxwel Cornet who had a shot on the volley from a cross by Bertrand Traoré: it was barely tipped away by Rajkovic. Two minutes later, it was again the Burkinabé who hit Reims' post following a cross from Moussa Dembélé. Finally, the third chance was the right one for the players of Rudi Garcia. On a ball poorly cleared by the defense of Reims, Thiago Mendes played the ball into the area for Lucas Tousart who responded with the perfect sequence of control of the chest and a volley to open the scoring (9 ’). Unfortunately, OL would not manage to keep that same intensity, which will allow the hosts to gradually enter the match.
The start of the second half is like the end of the first: the two teams neutralize each other and OL have trouble regaining their intensity from the first minutes. The duels are tough, the match is choppy but there are no real opportunities to report. It was not until the 82nd that Moussa Dembélé earned a penalty for a foul by Axel Disasi. The Lyon striker took it himself but he failed to trump the Reims goalkeeper. No more chances would come to pass and the two teams would start their holidays on level terms (1-1).
Thus, it was two points lost for OL, who failed to boss the game. It makes for a complicated end of the year with the defeat against Rennes last week, the injuries to Memphis and Reine-Adélaïde and today, this disappointing draw. The break is timely for the players of Rudi Garcia who will be able to rest before starting a second part of the season which promises to be tense but exciting.
. EXPERT ANALYSIS - Claude Rivenet.
This draw is not a good result. We will be satisfied with it. This time, we managed not to lose this kind of match. It’s a point anyway but we’re already way behind in the standings so it’s not enough. We are disappointed tonight. The season is going to be long. We already knew it, but this match is confirmation.
