Four days ahead of their big match against Leipzig in the Champions League, OL had no choice but to reassure themselves in the league. Beaten by Lille at the beginning of the week and having dropped to 10th, Lyon had to raise their game away to a struggling Nimes side. In a tense start to the match, Les Crocodiles were doubly penalized inside a quarter of an hour with a red card and a penalty converted by Memphis with a magnificent panenka. It was one of the rare moments to savor in a first very choppy period marked by a second Nîmes sending-off for dangerous play on Rafael. The men of Rudi Garcia meanwhile had some opportunities to take advantage of their numerical superiority but the post and Bernardoni combined to repel their attempts.
Faced with a Nîmes team that suffered but did not give up, Lyon pushed for a second goal. After an hour of play, however their efficiency was lacking and the opposing defense consisting of eight players stood firm. The light, however, came from the captain who notched a superb double and was even close to a hat-trick. The result in hand, Houssem Aouar would add a third as the match took the tone of a battle between defense and attack. Joachim Andersen took the opportunity to score his second goal for Lyon, his first in Ligue 1. Under the eyes of Jean-Michel Aulas, OL could calmly manage the end of the game without suspense and make a jump in the table to fifth, pending the results of the sides around it.
. EXPERT ANALYSIS - CLAUDE RIVENET.
It was essential to win this Friday. We waited for a second goal with some impatience. It's never easy to play against a team who are down a man. It was necessary to put together the right ingredients. We were also able to keep a level of freshness for Tuesday. There was, however, a black spot tonight. as we lost a player again to injury, we are hoping that it is not too serious.
