OL Group Press Release: A project to invest in women's football in the United States through discussions with Reign FC
Olympique Lyonnais is pleased to inform the public that exclusive discussions have been initiated for the acquisition of Reign FC, a founding member of the NWSL (National Women's Soccer League, National Women's Football League in the United States). Reign FC's outstanding squad includes forward Megan Rapinoe, FIFA player of the year in 2019, who played for OL in 2013 before joining Reign FC, as well as the Welsh international and former midfielder for OL, Jess Fishlock.
Reign FC, entering its eighth season in NWSL, play at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma, a city near Seattle, Washington. The club have finished first twice in the regular season (2014 and 2015) and participated four times in the NWSL play-offs (2014, 2015, 2018, 2019), playing twice in the finals (2014 and 2015). In 2019, Reign FC striker Bethany Balcer was voted "Rookie" of the year in NWSL, and Vlatko Andonovkski, the coach of the team, was named NWSL Coach of the Year . The latter has recently agreed to become the coach of the US Women's National Team, recently crowned world champion in the FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 final at Groupama Stadium last July.
This investment is expected to consolidate OL's position as a major player in women's football worldwide and further develop the OL brand in the United States.
The goal of OL and Reign FC is to finalize the transaction by 31 January 2020 in order for it to be operational for the 2020 season, which starts on 9 March 2020.
