The Lyonnais have taken advantage of the international break to rest. There are those who have changed their way of thinking with their international sides and those who have benefited from daily training to regain their spirits. Despite late arrivals having not allowed the best preparation for the reception of OGC Nice, the team could start a good foundation by winning today. On the opposite side, Nice haven't been playing well, offering up-and-down performances. Ahead of kick-off, both teams are neck and neck -- only one point separates them.
The match starts strong. Both sides are playing on the front foot, but it is OL that take the lead. In the middle, at the edge of the area, Jeff Reine-Adelaïde hits a shot across goal against Benitez who sees the ball end up in the net (1-0, 10'). Despite scoring the opener, Lyon do not release the pressure and get a penalty on a counter led by Terrier and Dembélé. The number 9 who drew the foul, is responsible for taking the spot kick and beating Benitez wrong-footed (2-0, 28'). While everything looked to be going for the best for the hosts, Marçal received a red card for a high foot that hits the face of Boudaoui (36 '). The proteges of Jean-Michel Aulas are now at 10 men and Rudi Garcia is forced to make a tactical change by taking off Jeff Reine-Adelaide, who had himself been shown a yellow card, to bring on Youssouf Koné. Even if Les Gones conceded some opportunities, they were perfectly dealt with by Anthony Lopes, and they realized a first period as convincing as it was masterful and logically lead (2-0) at the break, despite the expulsion of the Brazilian. Despite their numerical inferiority, they would continue to be solid.
After a long interruption of the match at half-time, the game resumed. Nice quickly reduce the score thanks to Dolberg, but the goal of the Dane is denied for offside. After a one-way first period, the Southern side return with the desire to get a result on the road. But the hosts answered the call despite their numerical inferiority. They still end up conceding ten minutes from time. On the right flank, Ounas crosses for Burner, making a beautiful run, who crosses in front of the goal. Dolberg, free in the middle of the area, gets a toe to the ball and turns it in at the far post (2-1, 78'). In the wake of this, Burner receives a second yellow card, and is sent off, following a big foul on Dembélé who was dribbling along the touchline (86 '). In a tense end of the match, OL hold on.
Rudi Garcia's players showed character and held on despite playing from half-time with ten players. Lyon won a deserved victory, an auspicious omen for the trip to St. Petersburg in the Champions League.
. EXPERT ANALYSIS - BRYAN BERGOUGNOUX.
It was hard after the sending off of Marçal. We marshaled the match well but it was difficult. We must tip our hats to Rudi Garcia: he has taken two points per game on average. There is a lot of satisfaction and relief. The players are physically tired. They have suffered a lot. It's good to win this match even if it was not necessarily the way in which we wanted it to be done.
