OM - OL : A run of invincibility in Ligue 1 since 2014
Surprising as it may seem from the team's prestige, Olympique de Marseille have not beaten Olympique Lyonnais since the 2013-14 season. André-Pierre Gignac, Nicolas Nkoulou and André Ayew still wore the Marseille shirt and offered up a very good performance. Diawara opened the scoring (1-0, 14 '), closely followed by Florian Thauvin (2-0, 26'). Even if Arnold Mvuemba allowed OL to keep their hopes alive with a powerful shot (2-1, 40 '), Gignac definitely broke them with a double (4-1, 48', 56 '), making a goal by Bafetimbi Gomis immaterial (4-2, 82 ').
This match, appearing to be from another time in view of the score sheet, was the last success for OM in the league against OL. Since then, Les Phocéens have won only once, in the Coupe de France in the 2016-17 season (2-1 on penalties). In the other ten matches played, OL have six wins and four draws. Even better: over the last five league games between the two teams, OL have won every time, with matches that have often been memorable; the goal in the 2-3, scored late in the game by Memphis in 2017-18, is an example.
These meetings between two outsiders for the championship of France are still events, despite the domination to some degree by OL in recent years. Often very close in sporting terms, the two clubs always go blow for blow in matches that are part of what is the best part of the championship in France. This season, the interest may be greater. With 19 points, OM are fourth in Ligue 1 Conforama. At only three points behind, OL are tenth and could go level with their opponent in the event of victory; what a possibility, to add a little more spice to a contest that never disappoints.
