In a complicated context, OL needed more than ever to reassure themselves. With 8 games without a win in Ligue 1 Conforama, Lyon had to resume their path forward tonight, in front of their home support against the promoted Metz side. Although there was a better display in the game last weekend against Dijon, the players of Rudi Garcia failed to win (0-0). It was thus important for the new coach to record his first victory with Olympique Lyonnais to finally launch the season. A crucial match on all fronts, which ended in a win to end a negative spiral.
The start of the match is clearly to the advantage of Lyon who are enterprising. Playing the ball high up the pitch, they have possession and try to break down Metz's low block. The first chances come for OL including a header from Andersen on a free kick by Memphis which is just wide (11 '). The breakthrough is found at the half-hour when the Lyon number 11 offers a moment of attacking brilliance by eliminating the whole Metz defense before scoring with an unstoppable shot across goal. Only two minutes later, the evening's captain is once again decisive in getting a penalty that Moussa Dembélé converts (33 '). Memphis has a great display and shows the way to his partners. Lyon are rewarded for their efforts and return to the locker room with an advantage of two goals.
In the second half, Lyon quietly manage their match. The pace is less sustained than in the first half but OL continue to create some opportunities, most notably a the spectacular scorpion shot attempted by Moussa Dembélé shortly before the hour of play. The players of Rudi Garcia are serious and solid defensively by not conceding any clear chances. The score could have been much heavier without many saves from the Metz 'keeper.
Lyon win against Metz and take the three points after a complicated second period. OL achieved a convincing first half with very good intentions in the game. The Lyon captain, Memphis, is emblematic in this very good first act with a goal and a penalty won. The second period was a little less exciting but Anthony Lopes' teammates managed to manage the match without conceding many opportunities.
. EXPERT ANALYSIS / BRYAN BERGOUGNOUX.
It was important to win. It's true that the second half was a little complicated. But in the first period we saw what we wanted to see with nice attacking moves. We are still a little uneasy but it's a good victory. It was the third game of the week, including Wednesday's, which left some traces on the team physically. We made the difference in the first half and this is very positive. Given the situation before the game, we can be happy to take the three points tonight.
