 MATCH SUMMARY

After two great successes against weaker opponents on paper, OL faced a team of quality. With six points, the French and Portuguese sides are tied and this meeting is an opportunity to take the lead over a direct rival. This match has the air of a final that must not be lost to go to the top of Group G.

On either side, players take the measure of the issue and put forth intensity. The ball is all over the pitch and passes between the feet of both teams in a lively start. Lyon press high, and on a bad pass at the back Rayan Cherki intercepts the ball and heads for goal, beats the goalkeeper and scores with a cheeky shot (0-1, 9 '). In a meeting that promises to be complicated, the trainees of Eric Hély and Pierre Chavrondier start in the best way.

Dominated in the game, OL eventually cede to the hosts' persistent attacks Lisbon. In the 36th minute, Sofiane Augarreau conceded a penalty for a foul on the opposition's number 11, Gouveia. Lucas Margueron chose correctly but lost his one-on-one and saw captain Tiago Dontas score his third goal in the competition.

Both teams return to the locker room on level terms (1-1). Les Gones hoped to get back in the game by scoring a goal quickly, but their play dropped in intensity immediately, leaving the ball to their hosts who logically leveled the score on a penalty. In a half dominated by Benfica, Jean-Michel Aulas's protégés would have to be more dangerous if they wanted to return to Décines with a victory.

The second period started at the same tempo as the first one. The ball moved quickly and the two clubs played the game. The midfield battles were raging and neither team really had the advantage over the other. Rayan Cherki could have unlocked the match on a nice combination with Bradley Barcola, but the goalkeeper made a fine save with his feet (69 ').

The best was yet to come, though. Lyon were warned by a ball that crashed off the crossbar of Lucas Margueron (90 + 2 '), but the answer was immediate. On a run of 30 meters, Pierre Kalulu beat the goalkeeper and set up Rayan Cherki who had only to push the ball into the net (1-2, 90 + 4 '). Despite a tense second half with the opponent dominating, Les Gones did not give up and took their chance to win. The players of Olympique Lyonnais leave with 3 points and take the lead over their direct competitors. In a crazy end of the game with chances from both sides, OL took the perfect shot.

. REACTIONS .

Eric Hély : "The first period was very difficult for us. We were struggling defensively and we could not develop our game collectively. Benfica dominated but we had the chance to open the scoring quickly. This victory is still pleasing because it is the victory of a whole group. The players who came into the match contributed to it and that's good for us. To say that one is almost qualified is to get a little ahead of oneself. There are still some things to be done. "

Rayan Cherki : "We came here to win and that's what we did. It is essential. We knew how to stay patient, we defended the necessary amount time, until the last minute when we managed to remain ready to score. On a personal level, it's going very well. I come down from the professional group and I had to show everyone that I did not come here to have a laugh. That's how it's done. It's all in your head. I was coming down for a good reason and I wanted to answer the call. The most important thing was the team's victory. "
