MATCH SUMMARY .
It is a record-breaking OL that went to Denmark with yet another exploit under their belt. For the Round of 16 of the Women's Champions League, Lyon were preparing to play their 100th match in the competition, a first. After a nice success (4-0) in the Rhone against Paris FC in the league, the players of Jean-Luc Vasseur were in ideal condition to start this meeting in line with the flavor of their accomplishment.
Not surprisingly, the four-time defending champions of the title fit perfectly into their match. Led by a record hunter in Ada Hergerberg, they settled right away in the opposing half of the field. The wait was short to see the Norwegian record her 50th goal in the UWCL. After a penalty kick for a foul on Dzsenifer Marozsán, the number 14 grabbed the ball. Without hesitation, she sent her shot across goal and put the ball in the back of the net (1-0, 17'). With this achievement, the holder of the first Women's Golden Ball is closer to the long-held record of the German Anja Mittag (51 goals). In a totally controlled match, it was not until the 26th minute that the Danes crossed the halfway line. The response of the Lyon was immediate and, at the half-hour mark, on a cross by Dzsenifer Marozsan, deflected by the goalkeeper Daugherty, Eugenie Le Sommer, unmarked at the back post, delivered an unstoppable header (0-2, 29 '). Time passed and opportunities too. One would have to wait for Eugénie Le Sommer's sumptuous shot to see the third goal. The forward recovered a lost ball by Nikita Parris and delivered a sublime shot into the top corner to register a double (3-0, 41 '). In a controlled half, where Sarah Bouhaddi had not been worried once, the European champions returned to the locker room with three well-deserved goals.
OL's start to the second half is in line with the end of the first. Never satiated, they push and force the opposing goalkeeper into several fine saves. But as powerful as she is, the American can not do anything on a header by Ada Hergerberg, displaying a thirst for goal that equals the record of Anja Mittag to become the co-top scorer of Women's Champions League (4-0, 54 '). The second half was thus punctuated by suspense; Ada Hergerberg: will she become the queen of the Women's Champions League? Despite many opportunities, she will have to wait a little longer before getting this trophy. For the moment, she has to settle for a magnificent place ex aequo with the German. In the end Lyon were not be able to beat the goalkeeper, playing an exceptional match, for the fifth time.
The proteges of Jean-Michel Aulas easily imposed themselves against a team in Fortuna Hjorring who only defended. With this success and a four-goal lead, OL are all but qualified for the quarter-finals and can calmly tackle the return leg at home.
Jean-Luc Vasseur :
"The players were very active. They smothered the opponent. It was a very good match from them. We had several opportunities. Overall, we could have scored more goals but it's already very good. They were perfect in their level of attitude and investment. "
Ada Hegerberg :
"Anja Mittag sent me a message. She's a legend, it makes me really happy to reach her record. We must always look ahead, this is what allows us to progress. I have to say thank you to my teammates. Sincerely, I think the team played a great match. When we play in one or two-touch football, we bring solutions, we are very dangerous. Now we have to go on and continue like this. "
Wendie Renard :
"We started this game well. The score could have been a bigger margin but the goalkeeper made good stops; we must not be choosy. We took a good lead for the return leg. What an adventure with this milestone of 100 matches reached! Some players have left, others have come but OL is still there. That's the most important thing. "
Eugénie Le Sommer :
"It's always a special competition for us. We always want to outdo ourselves. We took a big step towards qualification. I am proud to move ahead of a player like Camille (Abily) in the number of goals in the Women's Champions League. I think that Ada will break the record in the competition. As for me, I will try to get closer to her (laughs). "
