ASSE - OL : malheur au vaincu
If the derby is always a special match for supporters of both sides, this Sunday is perhaps even more important than usual. Authors of a low-key start to the league, Lyon and Sainté both have no choice but to consider a victory in a game that looms large.

The 2019-20 season represents a turning point in the recent history of Olympique Lyonnais. Since Vladimir Kovacevic (1981-1983), never had the Rhone club had a foreign coach on its bench. It is now the case since Juninho arrived, accompanied by Sylvinho. New staff and new players, new methods. If they bore fruit in the first two games of the season against Monaco (0-3) and Angers (6-0), the interim has been much more complicated. Les Gones are currently on a series of six games without a win in Ligue 1 Conforama (3 draws, 3 losses). But with a good win in the Champions League (0-2 against RB Leipzig), OL have a breath of fresh air.

In the Forez, the situation is also tense. After having raised the bar since his arrival in 2017, Jean-Louis Gasset left this summer, leaving room for his assistant Ghislain Printant. Despite initial success in Dijon (1-2), Les Verts have played seven games without a win in all competitions (2 draws, 5 losses) before a difficult bit of success last weekend in Nîmes (0-1). Nineteenth in the championship, ASSE is however only one point from OL, who sit in eleventh place.

This derby, beyond the usual regional bragging rights, represents a way out of their current poor runs The euphoria of winning this match could restore confidence to the winning team, while defeat would be even more cruel and bitter than usual for the loser. At all levels, the stakes are high and this ninth matchday could seal the ambitions of both teams, either at the top of the table or in the bottom half.
