Juninho: "The fans want to see new trophies"
His first words
"We started talking two years ago. I didn't know which path to choose. I couldn't refuse this proposal. I was a consultant for four years. The President came to me personally to tell me that we had to change something, but work on continuity. I immediately thought of Sylvinho. He accepted despite receiving other proposals from Brazil. But he got all his certifications to train in Europe. He was the first Brazilian player at Arsenal. He won the Champions League twice with Barcelona. He worked with Pep Guardiola. He was assistant to Roberto Mancini and Brazilian coach Tite. He has acquired a very important tactical culture... We complement each other. Our season starts tomorrow with the Europa League final. Bruno (Genesio) leaves us a squad with very interesting technical qualites. There are things that need to change, including goals, sacrifices and mentality. We lacked concentration in Ligue 1. We will therefore first focus on the domestic championship. Now, Sylvinho has the team in his hands. He relies on discipline. I will always be behind him."
Questions from journalists
Why he took the job
"Being able to choose the coach gave me a lot more confidence. The freedom to work has made the difference. We will keep this technical base and dream of winning a first trophy since 2012."
Things to improve
"This team lacks aggressiveness after losing possession of the ball. We haven't been able maintain our focus after playing big matches. Our defensive system is weak. They aren't just defenders."
"Some cases are special, like Nabil Fekir. We don't want to let more than three players go. We haven't confirmed yet who will leave. There's the chance of losing a great player. The priority is central defense. Sylvinho prefers the 4-4-3 [formation]... We will work on these two positions. We need leaders on the pitch in order to win trophies."
His new role at the club
"I won't be on the pitch. I will be a bonus for the staff, a little closer to Flo (Mauritius). This is new to me too. I will find my footing... I've been a leader since my first tournament. I've always wanted to communicate with others. I'm moving back to the club. I will be a liaison between the President, the leaders, the staff and the players."
Ambitions for 2019-2020
"We're still behind PSG. We have to focus on Ligue 1 and be more consistent. The fans want to see new trophies. Remaining in the Champions League and playing one of the two national cup finals are the goals for next season."
"I was pretty impressed. This is something different. I left in 2009 and the working conditions are really good. It's much bigger, much stronger, and there are a lot of expectations as well."
