After Nîmes–OL: Maxwel Cornet's remarkable end of season surge
If there's any Olympique Lyonnais player who wishes the season wasn't over, it would have to be Maxwel Cornet. The Ivorian striker ended 2018/19 in stunning form, closing out the campaign with a brace in Friday night's 3-2, come-from-behind win at Nîmes. With his two-goal haul at the Stade des Costières, Cornet also became Lyon's joint second-top scorer of the season in all competitions with 12 goals, along with Memphis and Nabil Fekir. It's a career-best for the 22 year old.
Cornet was on fire in the final run-in, participating in 11 goals in his last 10 games (6 goals, 5 assists), while notching six goals and three assists in his last five game. These performances helped OL clinch third place in Ligue 1 Conforma, which gives access to the Champions League next season. With the job well done at the club level, he can now focus on the upcoming African Cup of Nations with his native Ivory Coast.
