Maxwel Cornet shows he's a big-time player
Maxwel Cornet joined OL in the 2015 winter transfer window and played his first match just a few days after his signing - on Match Day 22nd in Ligue 1 Conforama against former club FC Metz (a 2-0 win) at the Stade de Gerland, coming on as a second-half sub for Alexandre Lacazette. On October 23 of that year, he scored his first league goal for Les Gones against Toulouse (3-0 victory). As time has progressed, the 23-year-old has gradually gained the confidence of head coach Bruno Genesio by being decisive seven times this season (four goals, three assists) in just 10 starts.
It's been a nuanced season with sporadic benefits for the Bregbo, Ivory Coast native. A frequent target of critics, the striker has responded by showing his true colors with some fantastic numbers of late. Cornet has scored three goals in his last three L1 games, and has been involved in five of the club's last 10 away goals (three goals, two assists). On Sunday night the Ivorian international bagged a brace in a 3-0 win at the Velodrome. Despite a half-hearted start to the season, he came up huge against Manchester City in the Champions League group stage by scoring three goals in both games. Even Blues boss Pep Guardiola was taken aback, saying he was "impressed by the talent of Maxwel Cornet".
