The marquee match of the Women's Champions League quarterfinal first legs didn't disappoint, with Olympique Lyonnais edging out Wolfsburg to take a 2-1 lead into next week's deciding match in Germany.
Wednesday night's showdown at Groupama Stadium between last season's finalists, who also boast Ballon d'Or winner Ada Hegerberg [OL] and runner-up Pernille Harder [VFL] in their respective squads, saw the hosts and defending champions line up with a 4-4-2 formation, with Dzsenifer Marozsan leading the charge in attack.
Amandine Henry missed a golden opportunity to give Lyon the early lead (3'), in a sign of what was soon to come. In the end, Eugénie Le Sommer broke the ice shortly after (11 ', 1-0) with a classy finish in front of goal. The lead was doubled in just a matter of minutes (18 ', 2-0), with captain Wendie Renard heading home a corner kick. It was an ideal start for OL, as goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi was barely put to work while Le Sommer came close to making it a runaway result, only to be denied by the crossbar.
Wolfsburg got their second wind after the break, playing with more clarity and effectiveness in attack. After some initial warnings, Fischer pulled one back for the visitors with a header and increased the suspense among the almost 20 thousand fans in attendance. In the end, Lyon were able to maintain a slim lead that's far from a sure thing - but it's a lead nonetheless for the three-time defending champs.
