Youth League: Griffiths snatches last-second draw for OL at Shakhtar
. THE MATCH
Second-half sub Reo Griffiths struck in the fourth minute of stoppage time to help OL salvage a 1-1 draw at Shakhtar Donetsk in their UEFA Youth League group stage finale.
Affected by numerous absences, the coaching tandem of Stéphane Roche and Gilles Rousset also had to deal with extremely difficult weather conditions in Kiev, where their improvised squad played under a heavy snowfall and in sub-zero temperatures. Largely dependent on Malcolm Barcola in goal throughout the match, Lyon's poor form finally came back to haunt them near the hour mark when Kashchuk (59 ', 1-0) put the home side ahead.
OL, who needed a win to finish first in Group F, were facing an uphill battle. The visitors pushed forward in numbers after the goal, but their efforts went unrewarded. Griffiths raised a glimmer of hope when he pushed Mayounga's pass into the back of the net and leveled the score (90 + 4 ', 1-1). But it was too late to get the win.
With Wednesday's result, OL finished second in their group and await Monday's draw to learn their next opponent that will emerge from the following pool of teams: Chelsea FC, Dinamo Zagreb, Dynamo Kiev, Hertha Berlin, Midtjylland, Montpellier HSC, PAOK Salonique or Sigma Olomouc.
We had the ambition to finish first and compete directly in the Round of 16. Finally, we will be in Round of 32, which gives us one more game to play. But we are still qualified for the knockout stage. We must continue to dream and especially work to try to go further. Reo (Griffiths)... is a player who can bring us a lot. Oumar (Solet) played in middle with the absence of Maxence (Caqueret). All the central defenders must be able to step it up a notch notch. He did it well today and, besides, he likes it.
