After a 3-2 mid-week win over Benfica in their International Champions Cup opener, Lyon got a tougher challenge on Saturday night against Inter Milan. Looking for more defensive depth, head coach Bruno Genesio went with a 4-3-3 at the Stadio via del Mare in Lecce. Despite the less-than-optimal state of the pitch, Les Gones created the bulk of chances in the first half, with Rafael, Martin Terrier and Mariano Diaz putting Handanovic to work in the opening 45 minutes.
No changes were made by either side at the break, but both teams seemed to switch roles in the second half, with Inter taking control of the proceedings and, unlike OL, taking advantage of their chances. Lautaro Martinez marked the difference for the Nerazzurri by scoring the game’s lone goal in the 52nd minute. In the final minutes Lyon brought on Aouar, Memphis and Traoré, who didn’t get enough time to turn things around despite their positive contributions on the field. Genesio and company have one more preseason test - on Tuesday against Chelsea - before kicking off their Ligue 1 Conforama season Sunday versus Amiens.
