OL's fifth friendly of the summer paired them with Benfica in Faro for the first of three dates in the International Champions Cup. For Wednesday's fixture at the Estádio Algarve, Bruno Genesio lined up a 4-4-2 diamond formation.
The Eagles, however, started off the stronger of the two sides and almost took the lead when Salvio smashed a shot off the post. Things leveled briefly before the home side saw another effort go off the woodwork, this time from Almeida. As the minutes advanced, OL grew in confidence, with Memphis and Traoré looking particularly active. Finally, in the 41st minute, Marcelo headed home Memphis' corner to put the visitors ahead. And right before the break, Traoré made it a two-goal lead thanks to a lovely bit of skill and even better left-footed finish.
As was expected, the home team came out swinging again in the second half, with Salvio being denied by the sticks yet again before finally pulling one back from close range. Feeling the pressure, Lyon tried in vain to absorb the attacks as Marcelo's attempted clearance of a low cross into to box ended up in the back of his own net.
Lyon wasted little time in responding, with Mariano dinging the post on the very next play. In the end, Terrier would take advantage of some lackadaisical Benfica defending to push a low cross from Cornet (who left the match late with pain in his thigh) to put Les Gones back in the lead - for good this time.
