A moment of Lacazette magic

OL struggled to overcome a solid Ukrainian side… but a Lacazette goal ten minutes from time ensured victory… OL are qualified for the last-16 of the Europa League...

Everything was up for grabs in the second leg of this round of 32 tie after the scoreless draw in Odessa. A place in the last 16 would be decided over 90 or even 120 minutes... Obviously Rémi Garde made changes to his starting XI, compared to the one that started in Ukraine. Gonalons was missing with a hip complaint. Otherwise there were no surprises as the team reverted to their 4-4-2 after the five-man defence in the first leg. Chornomorets aligned the same starting XI as the first leg...

It was an even start to the game with Lyon taking the first shot through Malbranque  (8'). The Ukrainian side showed no nerves. OL tried to impose their style. Grenier then sent a free-kick goalwards after a counterattack had been illegally stopped (16').  Chornomorets played intelligent football and looked to create the danger from set pieces. Fofana tried his luck from distance (29'). There was little room to operate with both sides closing down space…  Les Lyonnais found the going tough in the first half against an aggressive, organised side. The first 45 minutes failed to see a clear-cut opportunity for either side. If Chornomorets could go the distance physically, it could be a long night... OL needed more speed going forward and to get the ball wide...

The second half started in similar fashion… Lacazette went on a great run and shot on target (48'). Chornomorets refused to lie down though and had a great chance to take the lead when Berger's header came back off the post! Bedimo responded with a long range effort, and Malbranque followed suit. OL started to take control of the game.

But the home side still needed to take one of these chances and time was running out. With 20 minutes to go, Gomis had a chance that was blocked.  The Ukrainian side was putting up stern resistance... It was one-way traffic. Chornomorets ended the game with ten men after the sending off of Zubeiko for a second yellow card (foul on Fofana). Anderson sent a missile at Lopes goal (77').  OL held the ball and Lacazette netted the only goal of the game with a stunning piece of individual play (80'). Superb…

OL looked to put the game to bed. Briand replaced Gomis. But there would be no change to the scoreboard… OL will now take on Viktoria Plzen… But it was a really tough tie against a courageous Ukrainian side that caused Grenier and Co. more than their fair share of problems. A real European tie...
