An excellent draw…

Once again, Rémi Garde's gamble paid off as his side returns from Odessa with a scoreless draw thanks to an excellent Vercoutre and a disciplined team effort…

For this round of 32, first leg clash in Ukraine, Rémi Garde decided to rest the majority of his first choice starting XI apart from Bisevac (suspended in the league) with one eye on Sunday's Ligue 1 clash with Lille. It's a move he'd already successfully pulled off against Rijeka and Vitoria Guimaraes. He opted for the five-man defence with just one real striker (Briand). The Ukrainian side lined up in a 4-2-3-1 and featured former Ligue 1 player Franck Dja Djedjé. While the tragic events in Kiev meant this was a day of national morning, it was also a special match for the Odessa club who had never reached this stage of a European competition before.

The home side looked to control things early and refused to be rushed. OL also showed plenty of patience in possession. Vercoutre was called into action by Antonov (15') and then reacted smartly to deny a cross-shot (26'). Malbranque then crossed for Briand who saw his effort saved by Past. A really good chance!  The match slowly got into its rhythm and was an even and competitive affair. Vercoutre then produced a great save to keep out Antonov from close range. Vercoutre was imperial in the air… Chornomorets finished the first half on top, led by the lively Antonov as OL bravely held on for the half-time whistle...

The hosts rued the lack of a goal. But could Bisevac and Co. continue to hold out? Playing their first competitive match in weeks, would Matos and Co. have the fitness levels to maintain their first half efforts?

The cold descended on Odessa…  The home side then wasted an 'unmissable' chance straight after the restart. They are a surprising team! OL stayed organised and refused to panic. Briand called Past back into action (66'). OL had weathered the storm and left little room for the home side to exploit. The French side knocked the ball around and the pressing game of Briand, Danic, Mvuemba prevented the hosts from creating any more danger…

There were no goals scored. It was an excellent result for OL… a fourth scoreless draw for Chornomorets in as many meetings with French opposition... It will all be on the line in the return leg at the Stade Gerland, although Rémi Garde's side will have their noses in front and will almost certainly be a different side at home...
