OL get back to winning ways

Thanks to a blistering start in which they scored the only two goals of the games, Olympique Lyonnais defeated Guingamp. The result sees OL return to the winner's circle after five league matches without a win, however the evening was tarnished by the injuries to Lopes and Gonalons.

Is it a new dawn? The second half performance against Monaco suggested as much. Importantly, after weeks of injury problems, most of the squad is available again. Umtiti and Miguel Lopes are back from injury and Lacazette returns from suspension. Rémi Garde settled on a 4-4-2 formation, with a diamond midfield, for this crucial match against Guingamp, currently 5th in L1. OL currently lie 14th on the ladder and, just a week out from the derby against Saint-Etienne, Les Lyonnais can't afford to waste any more time... the club needs points!

OL stun Guingamp with successive strikes

From kick off, OL look to press their opponents and make the running. The visiting 'keeper claims two early OL corners. The rains come. OL opened the scoring in the 12th minute after good lead up play from Grenier and Fofana. The latter saw his shot saved by Assembé, but the rebound fell to Lacazette, who slammed the ball home from close range. Gomis doubled the advantage  a minute later. Released by an under-pressure Yatabaré, the Lyon forward raced clear and chipped the ball over the Guingamp 'keeper. The Lyon pressing game was making all the difference. A Lacazette cross was blocked and could so easily have found its way into the back of the net.

Anthony Lopes carried off

After 25 minutes, OL began to leave their opponents a little more ball. Lopes made a couple of good saves, but received a knock to the back and was replaced by Gorgelin. A Grenier free-kick flew high. The rhythm of the match was interrupted by the long injury delay. Lyon lacked the cutting edge they had shown early in the match. From a Grenier corner, Mathis almost scored an own goal. In stoppage time, Fofana tried his luck from 30 metres out with a shot that drew a fine save from the visiting custodian. Thanks to their perfect start, OL headed to the half-time break with a 2-0 lead against a side that enjoyed plenty of possession but had failed to anything with it in the opening 45 minutes…

Gonalons injured…Diallo sent off

After the restart there was danger in the Lyon box as Yatabaré saw his effort hit the post! Dabo's attempted clearance crashed against the crossbar! Gorgelin managed to punch the ball clear. Gonalons was suffering after being on the receiving end of a studs-up challenge from Diallo. The Guingamp player was sent off while the OL skipper went off on a stretcher. In the 58th minute, Yatabaré climbed highest but his header flashed just wide. Umtiti went down injured… but this time was able to continue. Lacazette was tackled in extremis as OL wrestled back control of the final stages.

OL in control

In the 73rd minute, Lacazette hit a volley from a difficult angle that Assembé had to save. Bedimo then sent a missile just wide from the left. Playing a man down, Guingamp looked down and out. Five minutes from time they managed a shot on goal that Gorgelin saved. OL sat a little deeper but were never troubled. From a Briand cross, Gomis was denied by the defence, however Lyon held on for the 2-0 win.
