An Olympic clash to whet the appetite

Matches between Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais are always a highlight of the season, especially when the two are fighting near the top of the table... OL look in better form that OM at present...

The recent clashes between the two Olympics at the Stade Vélodrome have been big games. For the last four seasons, the result of the match has had a big influence on the top of the table and it will be no different this Sunday!

OM a point ahead of OL. OM have stalled in Ligue 1 with just one point in their last three outings. OM lost in Germany in the Europa League on Thursday. OM also lost Gignac for several weeks through injury, and are still waiting for Loïc Rémy to reach 100 per cent after a series of niggling injuries. OM are a wounded beast and need to bounce back to back up their brilliant start to the season. Elie Baup will again draw upon a small squad which reduces his option in comprising a starting XI...

OL have made a good start to this marathon run of matches up until the winter break. Almost qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League, OL are ideally placed in PSG's slip stream… and OM too. But we can't say this match is to decide who will finish the season behind the giant PSG...  As Rémi Garde declared in the pre-match press conference, there's still a long way to go this season!

While OM maybe low on confidence, OL are riding a wave after their wins over Stade Brestois and Athletic Bilbao. Rémi Garde rested several players and those that stepped in more than fulfilled their roles as would-be stand-ins. The squad is all pulling in the same direction. While we await the returns of Bastos, Gourcuff  and Grenier… the OL coach could bring back Gomis, Dabo, Bisevac… who were on the bench on Thursday, as well as Mvuemba, unavailable in Europe...

We should see some new faces and some more freshness, both physical and mental. A win will be great for the standings and to get one over a direct rival. OL haven't lost in 6 away matches this season.
