OL share the spoils

The champions found themselves up against a tneacious lead side and were twice behind on the scoreboard. In the end, an Aurelien Chedjou own goal and a Fabio Grosso strike saw Lyon earn a 2-2 draw in a game where all the goals came from set pieces.
After the two week international break, Claude Puel was able to count on the return of the Italian Fabio Grosso at left back. OL's coach was also able to put out the central defensive pairing of Cris and Mensah for the very first time.

Right from the kick-off Lille set the tone with a terrible foul by Debuchy on Juninho, luckily the Brazilian came out from it without injury. Juni was even the first player to shoot on goal (9') but his long distance free kick flew over the bar. The match really got into overdrive after Hugo Lloris pulled off a fantastic save from a Beria header, then a Källström effort went just milimetres from the top corner of the Lille goal. From a wide free kick played in perfectly by Bastos Lille took the lead thanks to an unstoppable header from Adil Rami (14').Anthony Réveillère led the fight back with a great run down the right which was finished off with a shot, but Malicki was up to the effort and pushed it away (19'). OL's equaliser came from a free-kick taken by Juninho, nodded into his own goal by Chedjou (22'). Lyon came close to taking the lead from a Fred header after a corner but his effort was cleared off the line by a duo of Malicki and Mavuba (29'). Lyon should also have been given a penalty after Béria handled the ball in the box (40').

Lyon stuttered into the second half, in the image of Källström who was too hasty even though he was all alone with his back to goal in the box. Karim Benzema came on in place of Ederson to bring some attacking punch (59') but it was Lille who retook the lead through a cannonball free-kick from Bastos which took Hugo LLoris by surprise (62'). It was also from a set piece that Lyon managed to level the score for a second time with Fabio Grosso firing in a volley after having been left alone at the back post (76'). Chelito Delgado was about to come on, but at the same moment Mensah contracted a groin problem, so it was he who came off, being replaced by Boumsong (81'). In the dying minutes, Hugo Lloris was in magnificent form saving a shot from Hazard then a headed effort from Debuchy (86'). Grosso carved out one final chance in stoppage time, but his header landed on the roof of Malicki's goal.

Lyon and Lille share the spoils, with the team from the north making a good impression this evening. The OL squad now need to do all they can to recuperate before their trip to Bucharest on Tuesday.
