Check out all the reactions from OL’s 2-0 triumph over Real Madrid...
Gérard Houllier: Tonight, Real were a better team than the one we played last season, and much harder to open up. We really had to play well to beat them. Our first half was sublime and tonight I’m very proud to be coach of Olympique Lyonnais. Our aim was to blow them away in the opening 45 minutes. As a coach, you try and instil a philosophy in your players, a concept of how to play football.
Tonight we showed we’re strong. We created so many chances we could have easily have had more. This team has matured and has acquired a lot more experience. The players are able to train, even when the conditions are not suited and they will continue to improve. Today they are capable of controlling a game without the football – it’s all about positioning and openings. Even in the second half, Greg Coupet wasn’t called upon as much as last season.

Gergory Coupet: We worked really hard on this one and we did a good job. Today, the team that I admire is Lyon. Lyon has earned respect. Our midfield showed today they have plenty of skill and vision and I especially appreciated the welcome reserved for Djila.
With the warriors playing in front of me, I didn’t have a lot to do. Tonight was an easy night for me. The players positioning was perfect and Toulalan just keeps getting better and better. At Lyon we put the team above all else.

Fabio Capello: In the first half we had a few chances, but OL were better than us physically and technically. In the second half, OL stepped down a gear, but we were incapable of creating any more danger. What’s more, we were not very good in defence. We still have a lot of work to do. But I’ve still got confidence in my team for the coming season. We will improve and keep moving forward.

Jérémy Toulalan: We’ve made a great start to the competition with this win over Real Madrid. We knew we could play that well, but we also knew it would be tougher than last season. They were good, but they’ve only played two competitive matches this season. We made more efforts than them and we were rewarded.
Our first half was really exceptional. Nobody could have argued if the score had been 3 or 4-0 at half-time. Now we have to continue to work because it’s only going to get harder.

Fred: I’ve got a new hair-cut for the Champions League and I scored. It’s a very important win to start the Champions League. We’re full of confidence. Tonight we really played well and I’d like to thank Juninho for his inch-perfect pass, it was served up on a plate!

Florent Malouda: It was capital to win this match. Real has changed a lot from last year, whereas as we are pretty much the same. We wanted to do the same as last year and hit them from the start with a real intensity. We managed to open the scoring pretty early which was good for us and we created plenty more chances to score. In the second half we just tried to control the game. We showed other qualities, like our ability to defend. We fought hard, closed down the space. We’re not starting all over this season, we’re building on last year.
