Germany finished their World Cup in style. Overcoming the disappointment of their semi-final elimination at the hands of Italy, Jurgen Klinsmann’s side defeated Portugal 3-1 to finish third.
For the third place play-off game, the German coach chose to field a mixed team with the regular defenders and Michael Ballack on the bench, but the deadly duo of Klose and Podolski starting up front. In goal, Oliver Kahn took over from Jens Lehmann. As for Luiz Felipe Scolari, he elected to play his regular starting XI with just Luis Figo starting on the bench.

After an even and scoreless first half, Bastian Schweinsteiger showed off his shooting range with two goals (56’ and 78’) and Petit beat his own ‘keeper (61’) follwong another effort from the Bayern midfielder. At the end of the match, Figo delivered a perfect cross for Nuno Gomes to save Portuguese pride (88’).

Tiago played no part in the match. The Olympique Lyonnais player disputed 265 minutes in 5 matches of the World Cup.
